Terraced Backyard Transformation, Before & After

A steep, overgrown backyard rebuilt as curved sandstone terraces, raised beds and fresh turf, photographed from the first dig to the final planting.

Before: overgrown beds, crumbling brick planters and cracked concrete pathsBefore: the excavator arrives on the tired, dried-out back lawnDuring: the slope cut and shaped, looking out over the DerwentAfter: sandstone-block terraces and steps rising from the fresh new lawnAfter: a curved sandstone wall wrapping the new lawn and mulched garden bedsAfter: the gravel terrace with timber raised beds and a built-in sandstone benchAfter: the terraced walls stepping down the hillside, freshly plantedAfter: looking down the terraces to the lawn and clothesline, with views over Hobart

This backyard had a great outlook and not much else going for it. Decades of growth had swallowed the old brick planters, the concrete paths had cracked and slumped, and the steep lawn was too dry and uneven to use. We cleared the lot, excavated the slope and rebuilt it from the ground up: curved sandstone-block retaining walls with steps and a built-in bench, raised timber garden beds, a gravel terrace, mulched beds planted out with natives, and a fresh level lawn to finish. The gallery runs in order, from the first day of the dig to the final planting.
